A revised, simplified Balance of Performance system is set to be introduced to the FIA WEC, and it seems, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, in 2026.
In an interview with French outlet Endurance24 at the 2025 6 Hours of Fuji, ACO President Pierre Fillon admitted that the system in place for the 2025 season “clearly didn’t work” and that a new-look methodology is being put together in time for the next season.
“I think we should no longer talk about BoP, but about performance management,” he said. “We’re going to completely rework the BoP process. So the technical teams at the ACO and the FIA, and IMSA for that matter, are working with the manufacturers for next year with something simpler.”
Fillon also confirmed on the record that the manufacturers voted against scrapping Balance of Performance in a recent meeting in Paris.
“If you look at the gaps, almost all the cars were in one second during qualifying at Fuji,” he added. “And look at the gap between two cars from the same team; sometimes it’s more than half a second. So the BoP isn’t all that bad.”
“There were too many gaps between races; that’s what didn’t work. In fact, it’s not the BoP that’s the problem, it’s the process that’s in place, which we’re going to rework.
“I think the technicians tried to balance all the cars as much as possible. And that’s an extremely difficult exercise.”
“The BoP is only 30% of the result. The strategy, the tyres, the driver, the race conditions… we tend to forget that. It’s important to keep this aspect. To keep the strategy.”
