Schumacher Alpine Exit Confirmed

A social media post this evening from the Alpine Endurance team finally confirms that Mick Schumacher will leave the FIA WEC Hypercar team.

Schumacher had previously been linked to the Cadillac F1 effort with a complex potential arrangement that could have seen him in a reserve role for the incoming F1 effort alongside race appearances with Cadillac Hertz Team Jota, those doors though appear to have been closed and with no room at the Genesis Magma Racing inn either there appears to be no opening in the WEC for the German.

His 2026 programme then is still to be confirmed, though he proclaimed himself to be attracted to a potential IndyCar seat when he tested with RLL last month, telling Curt Cavin at Indycar.com:

“INDYCAR comes the closest to what I can still race,” Schumacher said during a midday break in Monday’s test. “I can’t go back to (Formula 2, which he won in 2020) because I won a championship. INDYCAR might be a good option.

“Obviously, my target the past couple of years has been to go back to Formula One, but that option hasn’t quite opened up this year or the years previous to that. So, at some point I want to race again in single-seaters, and therefore (this) option is a good one.”

Either way Schumacher’s tenure with Alpine comes to a close after two seasons, three podium finishes and a top ten result earlier this year at Le Mans.

The team posted on X earlier today:”What great memories we’ve shared over the past two years. Thank you, Mick, for your hard work, dedication and all your contributions to Alpine Endurance Team. Wishing you all the best for the future.

As for Alpine in 2026, António Félix da Costa is a confirmed edition, but with both Schumacher and Paul Loup Chatin as confirmed departure,s there’s a seat to be filled. Will the much-rumoured Victor Martins arrive, or has the Hypercar Silly Season got another twist in the tale?
