Aron Confirms Injuries After Bathurst Shunt

Mercedes-AMG factory driver Ralf Aron has confirmed that he has sustained two fractures in his back, following his accident during Sunday’s Bathurst 12 Hour.

The Estonian was leading the race aboard the #77 Mercedes-AMG Team Craft-Bamboo Racing AMG GT3 EVO during a restart in the ninth hour, when he collided with the stationary Porsche 911 GT3 R (992) of Johannes Zelger on the approach to Forest Elbow.

Both cars retired on the spot, with a Red Flag deployed as the incident was cleared. The incident has since sparked serious discussion about how race officials treated Zelger’s initial incident, with Aron – who had been experiencing radio issues – committed to his braking point and line before encountering the first set of double-waved yellow flags.

Both drivers exited their cars under their own power, before being evaluated at the circuit medical centre. Aron was later transported to a local hospital.

“Considering the circumstances, I am doing fine and my condition is stable,” Aron posted to social media.

“I suffered two fractures in my back, but I have full movement and sensation throughout my body, which I am very grateful for. Also very happy to see that Johannes Zelger was able to walk away from the crash.

“I have raced on many street circuits around the world, including Macau, Pau, the Norisring and even challenging places like the Nordschleife. I have a lot of experience in these environments, and I understand the risks that come with this type of racing.

“The situation in Bathurst was a serious one, and for that reason I would like to have a meeting and open discussion with race control to share my perspective. This is not about pointing fingers. It is about understanding what happened and making sure we can prevent situations like this in the future, so that racing at this beautiful track can be as safe as possible for everyone.

“I will work super hard to be back behind the wheel as soon as possible and hopefully have another crack at the mountain next year!”
