UPDATE: An updated timetable has been issued, with GTWC Europe Barcelona Race 2 set to begin at 18:20 CEST. Qualifying 2 will not take place. Track activity will begin at 14:30 CEST with the GT3 Revival Series season finale.
With the cancellation of Qualifying, Bastian Buus and Ricardo Feller have been confirmed as Drivers’ Champions even in the scenario that the #48 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG is disqualified from Race 2 at Misano.
The timetable for the remainder of the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup season finale at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is set to be overhauled, with an extreme rainfall warning currently in effect in the local area.
After heavy rain interrupted today’s Race 1, the weather conditions deteriorated further, leaving the organisers to cancel the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe support race which was set to conclude the day’s on-track action.
This bad weather is set to continue overnight, with a warning of up to 90mm of rainfall per hour, and over 200mm in a six-hour period, forecast.
Accordingly, a local government directive has prohibited all activities until 14:00 CEST tomorrow, meaning a new schedule will be required to maximise the available track time.
Currently, GT World Challenge Europe Qualifying 2 is scheduled for 11:15 CEST, before Race 2 at 16:00 CEST.
SRO Motorsports Group has indicated that priority will be given to hosting the four planned races, over the GT World Challenge Europe and McLaren Trophy Europe qualifying sessions.
A statement from GT World Challenge Europe reads:
“Due to persistent heavy rain at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the race directors have declared that conditions are not safe to continue with today’s schedule. As such, the remainder of Saturday’s activities have been cancelled.
“Further to this, a local government directive has prohibited all activities between 20:00 on Saturday and 14:00 on Sunday. This will require a new timetable, which will be released in due course and will remain subject to further alterations.
“Sunday’s programme is planned to start at 14:00 and will consist of races for GT World Challenge, Lamborghini Super Trofeo, McLaren Trophy Europe and the GT3 Revival Series. The remaining qualifying sessions may be cancelled. No additional activities will take place.
“Further information and the revised timetable will be provided in due course.”
