Couto Hospitalised After China GT Zhuhai Crash

Surgery required for fractured vertebra

Andre Couto is recovering in hospital after fracturing his L1 vertebra in a heavy front-end impact at Zhuhai’s Saturday China GT Championship meeting.

2000 Macau Grand Prix winner, long-time Super GT driver and 2015 Super GT GT300 Champion, Couto who hails from Macau was taken by helicopter from Zhuhai to Hong Kong on Sunday.

China GT Championship organisers say that Couto lost control of the Spirit Z Racing Nissan NISMO GT-R GT3, making front-end impact into the tyre barrier at the high speed Turn 6 kink.

Couto’s father stated in a Facebook post that:

“He is in stable and not in a critical life condition, but was seriously hurt. He is going to be transferred now to Hong Kong by helicopter for further surgery due to a broken vertebra.”

We wish Andre well for a full recovery.
