After Felipe Nasr placed Action Express atop the IMSA timing screens in Free Practice 1 earlier today, Olivier Pla set a 1:46.834 to put the #55 Mazda Team Joest RT24-P quickest in FP2 before night practice tonight.
Pla’s time was a tenth quicker than the best lap from Nasr in FP1, the Frenchman’s tour now the fastest DPi time of the week, and almost a second faster than last year’s pole time from the #90 Spirit of Daytona Cadillac.
Shortly after setting the time though, the #55 hit trouble, Pla grinding to a halt and bringing out the red flags.
The #31 ended up second fastest this time, and instead of Nasr posting its best lap, this time it was Pipo Derani who went quickest, though he could only manage a time eight tenths off Pla.
The top three was completed by the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac, 0.002 further adrift after Jordan Taylor’s personal best.
In LMP2, it was once again PR1 that topped the times, Matt McMurry setting a 1:52.149.
GTLM was the same story in FP2 also, with Porsche leading the way, its #911 911 RSR posting a 1:56.991 from Nick Tandy, to go two tenths up on the #66 Ford GT which put up a 1:57.201 right at the end of the session. The sister Ganassi Ford, the #67, finished up third, preventing the best of the RLL BMW’s from cracking the top three, Philip Eng reeling off a 1:57.507 in the #24.
It was a BMW on top in GTD however, Turner’s M6 GT3 ending the running with a 2:022.583 from Bill Auberlin. The #11 Grasser Lamborghini Huracan slotted in second, ahead of the #9 Pfaff Porsche.
Further down the order in GTD, there was a sizeable accident during the session, Don Yount in the #47 PPM Lamborghini having an off at Turn 3, destroying the car’s front-end and bringing out a lengthy red flag for the cleanup.
