Day 7 – Beads, Bars, (Spring) Break
Miles driven – 564.6
Total miles covered – 3167.6
On the road by 7am, it’s still dark thanks to the clocks going forward for daylight saving. Our route today takes on the I10 past Houston and into Louisiana.
The scenery changes once again, less dramatically this time though. As we leave Texas and it’s crazy crossovers, the freeway and surrounding countryside becomes flat and green. Bridges become a more frequent occurrence as they cross over various rivers.
The skyline of New Orleans comes into sight. Once again, I didn’t really know what to expect. My only real picture of the city was from the news when the disastrous Hurricane Katrina ripped through it, almost ten years ago now.
We headed for the French Quarter, where we would be staying the night.
Exploring the area it does actually feel very French. I wondered if it would be like what America uses the word French for in food. French – to add as much sugar or fat as possible. See French Vaniila, French toast.
Our visit coincided with the start of spring break, the famous Bourbon Street was packed with people. Bar after bar, live jazz and fresh sea food. It had a wonderful atmosphere. It’s a fantastic mix of cultures.
After sitting down and relaxing over fried oysters and a beer, a good nights sleep was in order. The final leg of our journey is in sight.
