6H Monza: Pre-Race Paddock Notes

News and notes ahead of the 2023 FIA WEC 6 Hours of Monza...

Isotta Fraschini demo runs

The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 6 LMH Competizione made its public on-track debut yesterday at Monza. The car toured the circuit in formation with the track day-focused Pista model with Jean-Karl Vernay at the wheel of the LMH.

Today there is a second demo scheduled to take place pre-race, with ex-Audi LMP1 driver Marco Bonanomi set to drive. Both Vernay and Bonanomi have been part of the car’s test programme.

“It’s been great,” Bonanomi told DSC. “There are a lot of people here, so many Italian fans. We are not racing at this stage, but it feels like we are part of the WEC grid. That has created a very nice atmosphere and gives everyone extra motivation for the project.

“It’s crucial because the brand has a very big history, but it was generations ago. Even I had a lot to learn about the ‘golden days’. It’s a high-level programme, and the quality is there. The Michelotto guys are doing a great job.”

Homologation for the Tipo 6 LMH is now being targeted for late October with Isotta Fraschini and team partner Vector Sport deciding not to try to rush the process in order to race at Bahrain. Instead, the test programme will be prioritised ahead of the 2024 WEC campaign, where it hopes to contest the full season.

So many fans!

Perhaps unsurprisingly, there has been a huge uptick in the number of fans trackside for this year’s 6 Hours of Monza.

Since Friday the paddock has been packed with enthusiasts of all ages, with the majority of the locals on hand to support Ferrari and welcome the AF Corse team home after its historic Le Mans victory last month.

The autograph sessions have been particularly busy, with hordes of Tifosi keen to see their heroes up close…
