Optimum On Top In Pre-Qualifying

Marvin Kirchhöfer was the quickest driver in this afternoon’s British GT Pre-Qualifying session at Spa-Francorchamps.

He set an outright benchmark of 2:17.050 at the end of the 55-minute session as the top seven covered under a second.

His teammate, Morgan Tillbrook, spent most of the session at the wheel of the #77 Optimum Motorsport McLaren GT3 Evo.

Before the McLaren factory driver’s last-minute lap time, #67 Orange Racing by JMH McLaren driver Marcus Clutton ran at the top with 2:17.320, which put him in second by the end.

Other drivers also took advantage of the hot, humid conditions to gain more mileage at the circuit, as well as prepare for the upcoming qualifying session.

Sam Neary of the #8 Abba Racing Mercedes-AMG set a 2:17.601 to finish third ahead of Hugo Cook’s #1 Barwell Motorsport Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2 (2:17.622).

Tom Wood put the #97 Beechdean Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT3 Evo in fifth place, after completing a best time of 2:17.694.

Spirit of Race driver Matt Griffin reeled off a 2:17.862 in his #55 Ferrari 296 GT3 for sixth place ahead of Patrick Kujula’s #78 Barwell Lamborghini (2:17.971).

Kevin Tse took eighth (2:18.731) in the #18 2 Seas Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo, having recovered from his crash during testing yesterday at the Eau Rouge-Radillion complex.

Jonny Adam claimed ninth in the #7 Blackthorn Aston Martin from a 2:18.921 lap time ahead of Kevin Macleod’s #3 Optimum Motorsport McLaren (2:19.115).

Earlier in Free Practice, 2 Seas Motorsport driver and championship leader Kiern Jewiss made front-end contact in his #42 Mercedes-AMG with Matt Topham’s #3 Optimum Motorsport McLaren.

The incident in Bruxelles resulted in a delayed start to pre-qualifying for the #42 after undergoing a full radiator change. Dawson completed five laps towards the end after the repair job.

In the GT4 category, reigning champion Jack Brown was fastest in the #90 Optimum Motorsport McLaren Artura GT4 with a 2:29.118.

Century Motorsport’s #71 BMW M4 GT4 Evo followed in second place in the hands of Charlie Robertson with his 2:29.342 time.

The #71 BMW, however, incurred two 2-minute stop-and-go penalties for excessive track limits violations, a seemingly regular sight at Spa-Francorchamps’ fast, sweeping corners.

Jack Mitchell took third in the #84 Mahiki Racing Ginetta G56 GT4 Evo with a 2:29.444, in front of the other #17 Optimum McLaren of Harry George (2:29.569).

Mahiki Racing reserve driver Blake Angeliss rounded out the top five GT4 cars, having set a 2:29.841 in the #69 Ginetta.

Qualifying takes place at 18:35 local time or 17:35 BST.
