Gibson’s GK428 LMP2 engine crossed a significant milestone during last weekend’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, as it passed the six-million-kilometre mileage mark.
The 4.2-litre V8 engine has exclusively powered the LMP2 category under the current ruleset introduced in 2017, making its racing debut at that year’s Rolex 24, and contested its 200th race towards the end of last year.
The Gibson GK428 currently powers over 40 cars across the European Le Mans Series, Asian Le Mans Series and IMSA Sportscar Championship, as well as at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The GK428’s days in contemporary competition are numbered, however, with it set to be replaced by a new, twin turbocharged 3.4L V6 unit developed by Gibson and Nismo when a new set of LMP2 regulations are introduced from 2028 onwards.
