Going into the upcoming “throwback weekend” at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, AO Racing had a problem: How can a team with only three years of racing history celebrate the throwback spirit while remaining true to itself?
In Costa Mesa, California at the annual Air|Water Porsche festival, AO revealed its solution to the world – in the form of “Sketchy”.
Sketchy is a concept-style version of the beloved and world-famous Rexy, taking inspiration from the brainstorming sessions which ultimately brought Rexy to life at the 2023 Twelve Hours of Sebring. The livery’s aesthetics come right out of a designer’s sketchpad, with the body panels filled in with green marker scribbles and rough, hand-drawn pen strokes.
“When I heard Laguna Seca was going to be IMSA’s first official throwback event, I was very excited as a long time sportscar fan,” said Gunnar Jeannette, Team Principal of AO Racing. “It did create an interesting problem for AO, as our team doesn’t have much history to throwback to!
“So, instead of a historic livery, we through our fans would appreciate seeing Rexy turn into his origin Story & first sketch. What better place for us to unveil Sketchy to the world than Air|Water. It’s a great opportunity to launch a fun project with the Porsche Community here in Southern California.”
Sketchy will make its debut in next week’s StubHub Monterey SportsCar Championship at Laguna Seca, where AO Racing and drivers Nick Tandy and Harry King will try and go back-to-back in GTD Pro after Laurin Heinrich and Klaus Bachler won last year’s race.
Alongside the launch of the car, a limited-run of Sketchy-themed merchandise is now available at AO Racing’s official website, and will be available to purchase now during Air|Water and during next weekend’s race at Laguna Seca.
