The FIA Formula 1 World Championship calendar for 2027 has been released, confirming that several crucial clashes with major sportscar events have been avoided next season.
The biggest news is that there is no clash between F1 and the Le Mans 24 Hours on the 9th to 13th of June, with the Monaco Grand Prix set to run the weekend before and the round in Portugal scheduled for the weekend after. Notably, the Monaco Grand Prix overlaps with the Le Mans Test Day, but that shouldn’t prove to be a hurdle as Platinum-graded drivers can apply for an exemption if they cannot attend it.
This opens the door to Formula 1 drivers taking part in the twice-around-the-clock French classic. Lando Norris, who previously contested the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 2018, appears most likely to take up the opportunity at this stage. The reigning World Champion has already sampled McLaren’s 2027 MCL-HY LMDh on multiple occasions during its developmental programme, at both Goodwood and Portimão.
Previously, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown stated that both Norris and his teammate Oscar Piastri are both interested in racing at Le Mans. “Who doesn’t want to win Le Mans?” He said. “I’ve talked to Lando and Oscar about it, and they’ve said they’d love to go race Le Mans. That’s cool right? I think all these motorsports converging are great.”
There’s also a chance for Fernando Alonso to return to Le Mans also, via Aston Martin’s Valkyrie programme. And an opportunity for a driver to run for the ‘Triple Crown’ in the same year, as the F1 calendar also doesn’t conflict with the Indy 500 (30th May).
In addition, the 2027 F1 calendar avoids conflicts with both the Nürburgring 24 Hours (27-30th May) and Spa 24 Hours (24-27th June) on the Intercontinental GT Challenge schedule.
This will allow Max Verstappen to sign up for further major GT3 outings, following his run at the N24 this year. Verstappen may also find himself in with a chance to race at Le Mans with Red Bull Racing technical partner Ford, though Ford Racing boss Mark Rushbrook previously ruled out a third car for Le Mans in the brand’s debut Hypercar season.
Fernando Alonso’s teammate at Aston Martin F1, Lance Stroll, may also be a prime candidate to sign up for a major GT race or two, after the Canadian raced at Paul Ricard in GT World Challenge Europe back in April with Comtoyou Racing.
