Allen
Lloyd – XK8 For British GT
This man and this car both have some history behind them.
Allen Lloyd
was very nearly the British GT1 Champion in 1997, partnered
by Tommy Erdos in that lovely green XJ220. It was close enough
that the former chemist-chain owner thought about hiring a
McLaren for the last race, didn’t do so, took another
good finish…and lost out to John Greasley and John Morrison
in the Porsche 911 GT1 (by just six points).
A brief flirtation
with carbon brakes on the XJ220 wasn’t satisfactory,
the Listers and McLarens joined the Porsche – and Lloyd
turned his thoughts to a racing version of the XK8.
“What
a shame to just pile up the leather and wood in the workshop,” said
Lloyd in 1999. Presumably it’s still there, together
with the car itself. But the Jaguar is at last about to go
racing. Partner Gerry Wainwright has been out testing at Mallory
Park, and a part or full season of British GT racing is about
to commence. Part or full depending on how the car goes, and
how often Lloyd chooses to race some of his other delightful
machinery (XJR-16, GT40).
It will race
in the GT Cup Class.
