FFSA GT – Magny-Cours – Race 2
Qualifying
The track was drying gradually for the second session, but the drivers
chose to keep tyres and setup for the wet. Bruno Besson (Force One
Viper) and Dominique Dupuy
(DDO Saleen) were the quickest two out there, with Romain Bera (PSI
Porsche) and Anthony Beltoise (Lease Plan Autovitesse Viper) next
up.
At half-way, Besson and
Dupuy were ahead of Bera, Zangarelli (Mirabeau Viper), Dumez (Larbre
Viper) and Beltoise. The late stages were lively: Bruno Besson improved
lap after lap and Romain Bera was now second quickest – but
some drivers were given a penalty by the race director because they
hadn’t respected the white line, Bera one of them, dropping
him to ninth. Bruno Besson hung onto his pole position, Dominique
Dupuy was second and William David (DSM Viper) third.
In the N-GT Trophy, Morgan
Moullin-Traffort, Cyril Prunet, Christian Demigneux and Christophe
Bentivoglio were very close. Until the chequered flag, the positions
were uncertain. Eventually Moullin-Traffort claimed the pole.
Race
2
A Saleen Win, But The Title For Bornhauser And VBM.

The last race
of the season was going to be dry. Bruno Besson (Force One Viper)
took advantage of his pole position to turn into the first corner
ahead of Dominique Dupuy (DDO Saleen), William David (DSM Viper)
and Lucas Lasserre (Mirabeau Viper#4). Dominique Dupuy was visibly
the quickest, and didn’t take long passing Besson who didn’t
resist unduly.
The leaders began lapping
the slower drivers, and Dominique Dupuy pulled out a five second
gap, but behind him, the battle between Besson, David and Beltoise
was a good one. This fight benefited Dominique Dupuy whose lead
was increasing all the time. Besson closed the door, while Beltoise
(Lease Plan Autovitesse Viper) and David exchanged positions at
the Adelaide chicane. Just before the driver changes, Dupuy was
leading by seconds, while Patrice Goueslard, who had started in
fifteenth place in the Larbre 550, was now fifth. Olivier Thévenin
(VBM Viper), who was in ninth place, pitted first, followed soon
after by Besson, David and Beltoise.
François
Fiat (DDO Saleen) inherited the lead with a large gap over Jean-Louis
Deglise (DSM Viper), Stéphane Lacroix-Wasover (Lease Plan
Autovitesse Viper) and David Hallyday.(Force One Viper) In spite
of the tough fight between Deglise and Lacroix-Wasover, Hallyday
was not moving up as fast as he would have expected, unlike Patrick
Bornhauser, who passed Blanchemain (Larbre Viper).
The last ten
minutes were going to be lively and decisive for the Championship
title. In fifth place, just behind Hallyday, Patrick Bornhauser
was a virtual champion, and the ball was in Hallyday’s court.
The Force One driver had to move up into third place to reverse
the situation. A contact between Déglise, who was in trouble
with his clutch, and Lacroix-Wasover, who took second, increased
Force One’s hopes. Unfortunately, within five minutes of the
end of the 2004 season, David Hallyday entered the pits, let down
by his engine. The last dramatic turn of events happened in the
last few metres, when Lacroix-Wasover, who was second, stopped his
Viper, out of petrol. Dupuy / Fiat took their second win ahead of
Deglise / David, and, finishing in third position, Patrick Bornhauser
claimed the first title in his career, winning the FFSA GT Championship.
On the last lap, Christian
Demigneux (Riverside Lamborghini) passed Thierry Rabineau (Nourry
Compétition Porsche) in the N-GT Trophy. However, Morgan
Moullin-Traffort was the class of the first half of the race, even
if Cyril Prunet (Tarrès Porsche) was leading before he had
an off. If they were not winners, Rabineau and Moullin-Traffort
could be pleased with their title in the N-GT Trophy.
Patrick
Bornhauser (right): “It is the first title in my career. The
early stages were not easy because Olivier (Thévenin) was
in trouble with the brakes. However, I could weigh up the car at
once and I pushed hard to come back on Hallyday, for I believed
he would be moving up quickly. So, I wanted to come back on his
tail to put the pressure on him. We are a small team and so t is
a true feat for us in the face of biggerams. The whole team has
done a great job. Technically we have been perfect. We have retired
only due to minor mistakes or to some punctures. This a team win.
My only regret is that Olivier could not be champion too, but he
is morally FFSA GT champion as well. Next year, if the rules do
not change too much, we will try again to win together.”
