Amongst the myriad snippets of information included in the SRO press announcement earlier was a significant announcement for the British GT Championship as Pirelli become the sole tyre supplier.
That marks the end of a decade long association with the British GT Championship from Avon Tyres who took over tyre supply for the Championship in 2006 from Dunlop (Team LNT’s Panoz from that year is below) and became title sponsors for the British Championship in following years.
SRO’s announcement makes it clear that the move to Pirelli makes full application of the FIA Balance of Performance more straightforward, it is certainly an opportunity for teams to migrate between the various Pirelli-supported Championships more easily, or indeed to make one-off appearances.
With the F4 series also on the same bill as British GT, and with those cars too running on Pirellis there’s a degree of logistical synergy at play here too.
Welcome to British GT to Pirelli. And many thanks to Avon for a decade of support.
