G-Drive Quickest In Final Monza Practice

JMW Ferrari hits trouble

Saturday from Autodromo Nazionale Monza kicked off with Free Practice 2 for the European Le Mans Series 4 Hours of Monza. Topping the session in LMP2 was the #26 G-Drive Racing Oreca 07, driven this weekend by Roman Rusinov, Andrea Pizzitola, and Alexandre Imperatori. Their best time of 1:35.943 beat out the second placed #21 Dragonspeed Oreca 07 who put in a 1:36.091 with Ben Hanley at the wheel.

Third in class was the #33 TDS Racing Oreca 07 whose best time of 1:36.272 came from Loic Duval on his fifth flyer.

ORECAs dominated the session, with 07s locking out the top seven spots in LMP2, the best placed Ligier being the JSP217 of United Autosport, their #32 being driven to a best time of 1:37.347 by Wayne Boyd.

In LMP3 the M Racing – YMR Norma M30 put in the best time, a 1:46.623.

Two tenths of a second behind them was the AT Racing Ligier JS P3, marking the first time this weekend a Ligier has broken into the top three in LMP3.

Third in class was the Ultimate Norma M30, a 1:46.874 was that car’s best time after completing 33 laps.

In GTE the #55 Spirit of Race Ferrari 488 GTE set the top time with a 1:48.022 coming from Matt Griffin in the session’s closing minutes.

Second in class was the #88 Proton Competition Porsche 911 RSR GTE driven to to a time of 1:48.567 by Gianmaria Bruni.

Rounding at the top three in GTE was the #66 JMW Motorsport Ferrari 488 GTE which set a time of 1:48.257. It wasn’t a clean session for the team though, as Liam Griffin locked up the rears at Turn 4 making contact with the wall head on. The incident caused a red flag that lasted for roughly ten minutes.

“If it was going to happen this is the best circuit in the world for it to happen (because Michelotto are close by) we are getting great support from Michelotto and are getting the car back together as quickly as possible,” team owner Jim McWhirter told DSC.

It remains to be seen whether the car will be repaired in time to take part in Qualifying.

The European Le Mans Series 4 Hours of Monza is scheduled for 12:30 local time on Sunday May 13th.
