Nürburgring 24 Hours: Friday Morning Notes

There are a number of drivers doing double duty here at the Nurburgring after competing last weekend at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Overall winner last weekend Marcel Fassler could do an historic double if he takes overall honours at the ‘Ring a the first man ever to win both races overall in the same season.

In similar vein Nicki Thiim could become the first man to win overall here in the same year as a class win at Le Mans.

In addition to that pair Abdulaziz Al Faisal, Joerg Bergmeister, Jeroen Bleekemolen, Pierre Ehret, Nick Heidfeld, Alexandre Imperatori, Pierre Kaffer, Pedro Lamy, Stefan Mucke, Lucas Ordonez, Markus Palttala, Alvaro Parente, Patrick Pilet, Rene Rast, Roman Rusinov, Darren Turner and Richard Westbrook, are all set to start their second 24 Hour race in a week whilst Darryl O’ Young will be on the grid here after failing to start the Le Mans 24 Hours after the withdrawal of the #99 Craft Bamboo AMR car before the race in France.

The damaged Schulze Motorsport Nissan GT-R is being repaired with assistance of parts loaned from racing rivals RJN Motorsport. Bob Neville’s team meanwhile are perplexed by the continued difficulty of meeting the 134db noise limit with their #80 car despite changing and later modifying both their race and test exhaust systems, the same car recently tested in the UK at 110db!

The latest on the noise issue is that the #30 car has been dealt a 5 place grid penalty due to the continued noise issues.

The damaged Schulze GT-R meanwhile, which suffered heavy front end damage after an off for Jordan Tresson yesterday evening looks like it may well make the Top 30 shootout at 5pm local after the team borrowed several components from RJN.

The Jota Mazda MX5 project meanwhile is going well “Any car driven to its limits is always going to be good fun,” said Stefan Johansson. The ex Ferrari F1 man and Le Mans 24 Hours overall winner though perhaps enjoyed his rookie test here rather less “I had to share a classroom for a day with a few teenagers and scared looking trackday guys who were probably a bit surprised to see me there!”
