At the annual Spa 24 Hours press conference, SRO boss Stephane Ratel proposed a new ‘semi-independent’ GT4 class for the British GT championship, provided the total series grid grows to the level of 40-45 cars.
Under the proposed plan, GT3s and GT4s would continue to race together at large F1 circuits such as Silverstone and Spa, but there would be seperate races at smaller British national circuits.
There would also be two sub-classes in GT4 – one for Pro-Am driver pairings and one for pairs of silver-rated up-and-coming youngsters.
There is also interest in a GTC class for one-make Ferrari, Porsche or Lamborghini cup cars within British GT. These would run with the GT3s at any split-grid meetings.
For TV coverage, the objective for 2015 is live broadcasts of ‘most or all’ of SRO’s British events (F3 and GT) – although this remains an objective rather than a confirmed situation.
British F3 remains a cause for concern, with as few as six cars at some meeting this year, but a recovery to 14 for the races here at Spa this weekend. Ratel stated he didn’t want to abandon the significant history of British F3, but that ‘the right solution would have to be found’ in conjunction with the FIA and MSA.
