Tudor United Sportscar Championship

Marshall Pruett reported yesterday that following on from NASCAR’s lead, TUSCC has adopted the policy of requiring its drivers to stay inside stricken cars unless personal safety is at risk, this in the wake of the incident that led to the death of
Kevin Ward Jr.

IMSA’s Rule 48.5.1 states:

DISABLED CARS. During an Event, if a Car is involved in an incident and/or is stopped on or near the Racing surface and unable to continue to make forward progress, unless extenuating emergency conditions exist with the Car (i.e. fire, smoke in cockpit, etc.), the Driver should take the following steps as a Full Course Yellow is declared:

• Communicate the condition of the Driver and Car to Officials where possible;
• Shut off electrical power;
• Do not loosen, disconnect or remove any Driver personal safety equipment until directed to do so by Officials;
• After being directed to exit the Car, Driver should proceed as directed by Officials;
• A Driver must not approach any portion of the Racing surface; A Driver must not approach another moving vehicle.

48.5.2. DRIVER EGRESS.

A Driver exiting a Car stopped in a location away from the Racing surface should first communicate the condition of the Driver and Car to Officials where possible, shut off electrical power, and only move directly to a protected location behind a wall, other barrier, or as directed, and must not approach the Racing surface or other moving vehicles.

Australian GT – Sydney Motorsport Park

Barton Mawer, is set to make a one-off appearance in Angelo Lazaris’s Lotus Exige GT3 in the Trophy class.

The ex Cadena supercharged 1.8-litre Lotus, one of only four Exige GT3s built, has contested the national series on and off since 2007 (seen below back in ’08), often with Mawer as a seeded professional co-driver with Lazaris in longer races.

But this time Mawer will be driving the supercharged 1.8-litre Lotus solo in the hour-long heats on Saturday and Sunday thanks to a generous offer by Lazaris, and sponsorship from Sydney commercial fit-out company Mammoth Projects.

“Angelo didn’t have to ask me twice if I wanted the drive!” he said.

“The Lotus should be competitive in its class, even though it’s one of the oldest cars in the field and at least 100kW down on the Audis and Lamborghinis.

“But it’s very quick around corners, and great under brakes.

“I managed to qualify it on the second row for the GT Championship round at Phillip Island in 2011.

“The outright cars are a lot faster now, but we should liven up the Trophy class.

“And if there’s a sprinkle of rain, we might give a few Championship cars some hurry-up!”
