Jonathan Williams 1942-2014

Ex Ferrari factory driver Jonathan Williams has died aged 71.

Best known for his single seater exploits up to and including a single F1 Grand Prix, finishing 8th for the Ferrari factory team in Mexico in 1967.

His career also included a number of starts for the Ferrari factory team in sportscars but he is perhaps best known in the endurance racing world for a later exploit, as one of the drivers for the extraordinary Porsche Porsche 908/02 camera car in the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours. Entered for Solar productions, the car provided much of the ‘drivers point of view’ footage that makes the movie Le Mans a fan favourite to this day.

The car was unclassified in the race having failed to cover sufficient distance to be a classified finisher, but had covered enough distance to cross the line in the top eight overall.

Our condolences to Jonathan’s many friends in the sport.
