Porsche Kremer Racing are something of an institution in sportscar racing with a history longer than a gibbon’s arm.
In recent years though the team has been principally restricted to one make Porsche racing either in standalone racing or in class in the VLN.
Now though they have turned it up to bonkers!
For the 2016 season they are preparing something they are calling a 997 K3!
What’s a 997 K3? well it’ a standard Porsche 997 GT3 Cup with the bodywork replaced by a pretty faithful recreation of the 1979 Group 5 Kremer Porsche 935 k3, one of the most successful racing cars at the end of the 70s and early 80s!
Back in the day the original K3, developed by Erwin and Manfred Kremer on the base of an already challenging Porsche 930 Turbo with a 3.2 litre turbo engine, intercooler and up to 850 HP.
Klaus Ludwig used his K3 (below) to win 10 of 11 races on the way to the 1979 DRM Championship.
And a Kremer run car also took the overall win at the 1979 Le Mans 24 Hours in the hands of Ludwig and the Whittington brothers.
Under the guidance of Kremer racing Holger Zimmermann with his company Zimspeed produced the outer skin, his father Ekkehard was closely associated with the original cars.
We wait to find out where the case will be accepted in competition but this thing is a sure fire fan favourite! Stop Press – Soren Herweg advises us that as the Porsche 997 GT3 Cup is more than 10 years old (REALLY!!) the car is automatically accepted in VLN Group H – for historic vehicles!
