AMG, in its capacity as the customer sport arm of Mercedes-Benz looks close to entering the IMSA Daytona Prototype international (DPi) marketplace.
racer.com has reported that a Mercedes-Benz AMG DPi has been actively touted to a number of existing teams utilising the 2017 Riley/Multimatic P2 chassis with the well proven AMG GT3 V8 engine with custom DPi bodywork featuring AMG styling cues.
Whilst the 2017 GM (Cadillac) and Mazda DPi programmes look set to focus on high profile efforts from targeted (and factory backed) teams. AMG’s focus looks set to be a far more customer-driven affair, utilising a business model more akin toothier GT3 products and believed to involve AMG providing engine and bodywork only, the teams themselves responsible for purchasing the core chassis.
Whilst discussions have taken place with IMSA teams over the project there is no clarity as yet over the potential timeline with some sources suggesting a potential mid-2017 introduction for the project.
