A trio of drivers have brought helmets with emotional back stories to the 2021 Le Mans 24 Hours:
Patrick Pilet, about to embark on his second consecutive Le Mans as an LMP2 driver with IDEC Sport will be sporting his father’s racing colours this year as an emotional tweet this morning explained.
“This year for the 24 Hours of Le Mans I will be wearing my father’s colours. He never got the chance to run here and I wanted to honour him by wearing his colours. I Love You Daddy and I will give everything so that in front of your TV you can see me winning the race with this helmet.”
Antonio Garcia will sport the racing colours of his sporting hero, ex F1 driver and Team Manager Adrian Campos who passed away in January, the Spanish factory Corvette driver worked with Campos’ son to develop a helmet design blending his fathers helmet design with that of Garcia.
And Jordan Taylor will sport a helmet paying tribute to his sporting hero too, his Instagram post earlier this week stated:
“It’s been so special to drive the #3 Chevrolet Corvette the past few years. That number and the Chevy brand are synonymous with one man: Dale Earnhardt Sr. “I wanted to make a tribute helmet to honour him at this years 24 Hours of Le Mans. 20 years ago, Dale Sr drove the #3 Corvette at the Rolex 24 and I’m sure it was in the plans to race at Le Mans one day as well. A big thank you to Dale Jr. for giving me the permission to bring back his Dad’s iconic helmet and blend it with mine. And an amazing job by Mike Savage to get it done so well. We’ll do everything we can this month to make Dale Sr proud.
