The BRSCC’s chief scrutineer and British GT’s long-standing eligibility scrutineer Jon Crook passed away last Monday.
Jon began his motorsport journey in the mid 80’s, with his first event in the sport as a Scrutineers’ Marshal at Silverstone. Throughout his training, he progressed through technical examinations and attending numerous National and International events to become a fully licensed Scrutineer and was one of only twelve appointed technical commissioners by Motorsport UK. Throughout his time in the pitlane, he oversaw eligibility of the likes of the TVR Tuscan Challenge, SEAT Cupras, Formula Ford and British GT, the latter of which he continued to be associated with until the present day before his unfortunate passing, all performed to the highest standard.
His outstanding work even provided a gateway for an approach from the FIA to assist with various GT and drifting events around the world, including the first ever FIA Intercontinental Drifting Cup. He was a stalwart of the club, a devoted volunteer and someone who never said no to a new challenge, as well as offering valuable technical advice to the Club across its broad range of championships and series, including on new projects.
Many have described Jon as the toughest and fairest scrutineer they’d ever worked with and he made a real effort to work with race teams, rather than against them, to ensure they were compliant. Jon was always someone who gave his verdict in black and white, but there was always a politeness and professionalism to his work and his attitude that ensured he always performed his duties to the highest standard. He was an outstanding engineer, too, and always seemed to find a way around any problem presented to him. Alongside motorsport, Jon was a keen lover and enthusiast of all sports, and especially loved cricket, rugby and football.
But it’s within the British GT paddock that Jon’s legacy will perhaps live longest. He and his wife Sue – another dedicated BRSCC club member and official – are two of the championship’s most recognisable volunteers thanks to their years of service during race weekends and beyond.
