The current generation of LMP2 cars will live on in competition until the end of the 2025 season in the latest change announced to the teams today by LMEM.
The change follows the announcement in June of this year that initially predicted the new generation of LMP2 cars would debut in the 2025 season, these the cars based on the chassis currently being developed by Dallara, Ligier, Multimatic and Oreca for the LMDh cars that are set to contest the Hypercar (FIA WEC) and GTP (IMSA) classes in 2023 and beyond.
Those new LMP2 cars now seem set to debut no earlier than 2026.
No further official information has been released but further changes are likely, with announcements currently slated for early December.
That is widely predicted to include the end of the LMP2 class in the FIA WEC after the 2023 season as the number of Hypercar entries grows again, and the new GT3-based GT category is introduced.
If (and when) confirmed that would see the LMP2 class revert to the ELMS and Asian Le Mans Series (plus IMSA) with automatic invitations into double figures for the Le Mans 24 Hours.
Already confirmed for 2023 is that the LMP2 Pro-Am class (for crews including at least one Bronze-rated driver)will no longer be a part of the FIA WEC but will live on in the European Le Mans Series.
