BMW breaks through at Daytona

The 2019 season in FIA WEC terms featured the second half of the ‘Super Season’ that began back in May of 2018 and the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

Unfortunately, the end of the ‘Super Season’ also saw the MTEK BMW factory programme exit stage right after a disappointing maiden campaign for the M8 GTE in Pro. It was a new dawn though for Porsche after the 2019 Le Mans 24 Hours, with the 911 RSR 19 making its debut at the start of the 2019/20 pandemic-interrupted FIA WEC season.

While MTEK struggled, for BMW there was at least a significant result to celebrate in the USA in 2019, with Team RLL beating Risi Competizione to a Rolex 24 Hours GTLM win.

However, ‘Bamthor’ was in full force that year across the season winning the title for Porsche.

Porsche would also win the 2018/19 WEC Pro title with Michael Christensen and Kevin Estre. The duo’s win the year prior at Le Mans proved to be a springboard to winning the title at La Sarthe in the final race, which doubled as the second Le Mans 24 Hours of the season and was won by AF Corse.

A Porsche also triumphed in GTE Am that season, Project 1’s Jorg Bergmeister, Patrick Lindsey and Edigio Perfetti wrapping up the title with a win in the finale.

Over in Europe, a Ferrari claimed the LMGTE title in the ELMS too, with a strong campaign from US-flagged team Luzich Racing.
