When Proton Competition announced it had gained Mustang Sampling as a title sponsor for its 2024 IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship entry, some noticed that the number had changed along with the livery.
The number 59 Proton Competition Porsche 963, previously sponsored by WeatherTech, changed to number 5 – which has long been associated with Mustang Sampling-sponsored cars throughout the brand’s history in IMSA.
However, that number was already registered to JDC-Miller MotorSports for their own Porsche 963, leaving some to wonder if the Minnesota-based team would also be changing numbers.
Today, JDC-Miller posted to their Instagram account that the “Banana Boat” Porsche will revert to the familiar number 85 next season, which was assigned to the team’s Duquiene LMP3 programme last year.
JDC-Miller carried the number 5 on its Cadillac DPi-V.R from 2020 to 2022 with Mustang Sampling sponsorship. It kept the #5 on its new customer-run Porsche last year, anticipating that the energy company would return to the team – a return that never materialised.
