The opening rounds of the new-for-2024 NES – Nurburgring Endurance Series, due to take place this coming weekend, have been cancelled.
A new Series, NES put together by organisers AvD, was announced with plans for a full 2024 calendar, later adjusted to a 5 weekend Series after after a legal battle between the owners of the Nurburgring and the long-established established Series organising clubs of the VLN/ NLS concluded with a judgment that both Series must be given equal access to the circuit.
NES was set to stage two days of testing on the Nordschleife on Friday and Saturday ahead of 2 x 90 minute races on the Grand Prix circuit this weekend to start their season.
The NES though has now cancelled these races in the wake of very limited entries emerging (it is suggested perhaps in single figures only), and of ongoing difficulties in garnering support from enough volunteer marshals to staff the events after a campaign by the NLS, their support essential if the new Series is to become a racing reality.
The test days look set to be fairly well supported though with teams preparing for NLS and the Nurburgring 24 Hours as well as those who had signed to compete in NES.
A spokesman for NES confirmed to DSC that the Series still plans to complete the remainder of their calendar, next up a 4 hour rce on the Nordschleife in early May.
At present 10 (now 9) racing weekends are planned and were split evenly between the two warring camps.
