Following the announcement back in July of Nico Müller’s departure from Peugeot’s Hypercar team at the end of the season, now, as expected, comes the news of what appears to be a somewhat complex shift, principally to Formula E for the Swiss in 2025 with Andretti.
The Race’s Formula E editor Sam Smith has been all over this story for several months. He accurately predicted it seems, that the move to Andretti is a way station for Müller to be named as a Porsche factory driver for 2025 season, as a potential replacement for Antonio Felix Da Costa in the Porsche Formula E stable for the 2025/26 campaign.
His confirmation as a 2025 Porsche Factory driver came on Wednesday – this story updated with quotes below.
In the meantime he replaces Norman Nato at Andretti, and will drive one of its its Porsche-powered challengers alongside Jake Dennis for 2024/25 season, which gets underway in December.
Smith also predicts that there is potential for Müller to be placed in a Porsche customer Hypercar seat in 2025, with Proton currently the only available option in the WEC.
Müller finished Formula E Season 10 strong with a streak of four top-six finishes driving for Cupra to round out his fourth campaign and best finish in the Driver’s Championship standings. Throughout his 46 Formula E starts, he has one podium finish, two fastest laps and has led 13 laps.
The addition of Müller to Andretti Formula E comes after a season of mixed results that saw the American team score one win, one pole, five podium finishes and fifth in the Team’s Championship, the highest finishing customer team in Formula E.
Season 11 will be Andretti Formula E’s 11th season of Formula E competition, dating back to the inaugural 2014/2015 season when the team became the first American outfit to join the all-electric racing series.
Müller will take to the track for the first time with Andretti Formula E later this month as part of a Porsche Manufacturer test alongside teammate Dennis, before heading to Valencia in November for the official pre-season test.
Nico Mueller: “Being a Porsche works driver is a childhood dream come true for me.
“When I first came into contact with Porsche, I immediately realised: this is something very special. As a racing driver, Porsche is the brand you look up to.
“To be able to represent Porsche now is a great honour that fills me with a great deal of pride.”
Thomas Laudenbach: “We are delighted to welcome another professional with such extensive and varied motorsport experience to our squad.
“Nico has already successfully demonstrated his skills in various challenging racing series. Among other things, he has won the Nürburgring 24 Hours and was twice runner-up in the DTM.
“We initially expect his expertise in formula racing to play a crucial role for Porsche’s Formula E program. We will announce at a later date whether and in which other series Nico will also drive for Porsche.”
