Watkins Glen 6H: Friday Paddock Notes

News and notes from the first day of on-track action at Watkins Glen...

Taylor in, Lucas out at Korthoff

There has been yet another driver change in the GTD class for this weekend’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen.

Before Practice 1 this morning, Mikey Taylor was appointed to drive the #32 Korthoff Competition Motors Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO, replacing Seth Lucas.

The 2024 Michelin Pilot Challenge TCR Champion, who has 10 career wins in that series, will make his WeatherTech SportsCar Championship debut.

Curiously, as of publication, Korthoff Competition Motors’ official website is not accessible, and the official Instagram account no longer has any posts from after last year’s Petit Le Mans.

However, decals of Competition Motors – the Ohio-based automotive network owned by Seth’s father, Chris Lucas – and personal sponsor Motul, were still on the car as it went out for Practice.

Spike gets his Le Mans gold!

The red, white, and blue wings of ‘Spike the LMP2 Dragon’ aren’t the only cosmetic change made for the #99 AO Racing ORECA LMP2 after all!

Spike will have a gold tail to commemorate PJ Hyett, Dane Cameron, and Louis Deletraz’s LMP2 Pro/Am class win at the Le Mans 24 Hours, matching the gold teeth of Rexy and the gold claw nails of Roxy.

Altzman puts MMR Mustang on pole for Pilot Challenge race

Ford Performance Junior Team driver Jenson Altzman, just back from racing in the inaugural Mustang Challenge Le Mans Invitational, drove the #13 McCumbee McAleer Racing with Aerosport Ford Mustang GT4 to pole position for tomorrow’s Michelin Pilot Challenge LP Building Solutions 120.

Of note this week is that Altzman will share the #13 Ford with team co-founder Chad McCumbee, who replaces Sam Paley due to a lack of funds available from the latter.

Paul Holton was second-fastest in GS aboard the #46 Team TGM Aston Martin Vantage GT4 ‘EVO’, followed by Sean McAlister in the #39 CarBahn with Peregrine Racing BMW M4 GT4 EVO, and GS points leader Luca Mars in the #28 RS1 Porsche 718 GT4 RS Clubsport.

The #54 Panam Motorsport Toyota of Caio Chaves and the #44 Ibiza Farm Motorsports McLaren of Moisey Uretsky put six manufacturers in the top six grid spots for Saturday’s two-hour race.

In TCR, Louis-Philippe ‘LP’ Montour won the pole in the #93 MMG Honda Civic FL5, by a significant margin ahead of the Audis of Celso Neto (#7 Precision Racing LA) and Sam Baker (#52 Baker Racing) in second and third.

Baker Racing brings Junqueira into second Audi TCR

Canadian team Baker Racing has expanded to add a second Audi RS 3 LMS TCR for Watkins Glen, driven by 2023 SCCC TCR Champion Dean Baker – and open-wheel racing standout Bruno Junqueira!

The International Formula 3000 Champion and Champ Car World Series race winner is here for his first major racing appearance in over six years.

The arrangement came together via the two drivers’ prior work as driver and coach during Baker’s 2019 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season. Junqueira can still be spotted in the Lexus/3GT Racing firesuit he last wore at the 2018 Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Dean qualified ninth in TCR for Saturday’s race, six places behind his son Sam.

Dickinson continues the momentum from Montreal to win Carrera Cup Race 1

Last week, Porsche Carrera Cup North America supported the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix – where Riley Dickinson and Ryan Yardley split the weekend’s races, and local driver Zachary Vanier recorded two podium finishes.

Today in Watkins Glen, it was Dickinson who won the race after Yardley started from pole position. The 2023 PCCNA Champion held on for the win, his fourth of the season – by just 1.8 seconds over Yardley, with Jimmy Libre in third and Vanier in fourth.

Alan Metni collected his first Pro-Am class win of the season, while Scott Blind won the Masters class for the sixth time in seven races, strengthening his grip on the title as it stands.

De La Torre, Bamber collect Super Trofeo Race 1 win

Wayne Taylor Racing’s Danny Formal and Hampus Eriksson swept Sebring, teammate Nick Persing did the same in Laguna Seca, and in Race 1 of Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America at Watkins Glen, TR3 Racing’s Elias de la Torre and Will Bamber took their first win of the season in the #29 Lamborghini.

Al Morey and Jake Walker were second for Forty7 Motorsports, followed by Persing in third, and Alliance Racing’s Luke Berkeley and Ernie Francis Jnr, the latter as the defending series champion, in fourth.

Formal and Eriksson dropped to 25th in the order after they were given a 35-second post-race time penalty for an unserved drive-through penalty; they were one of six cars given drive-throughs after short pit stops.

In a one-off for RAFA Racing, Harry Gottsacker and Tyler Gonzalez won the Pro-Am class; Graham Doyle and Glenn McGee captured Am class victory for the fourth time this season, and Mark Brummond took his first LB Cup class win for Forty7 Motorsports.
