Work Began On Building The Nurburgring 100 Years Ago Today

One hundred years ago today, on 13 August 1925, the construction of the Nurburgring was approved.

The project came as part of a package of ‘major emergency projects’ by the German Ministry of Welfare as the country struggled to regain economic footing post World War 1.

The very next day, contracts were signed with the four companies that would build the 28-kilometre-long track in two years.

From then on, the track was built by up to 2,300 workers at a time, who, previously unemployed, earned money building the Nürburgring, thereby not only securing their own livelihoods, but also creating something that has been providing important economic impetus to the Eifel region since the mid-1920s.

The Nurburgring opened in 1927.
