It’s been over four months since the announcement that the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series will form the basis of the next Mercedes-AMG GT3, replacing the current, hugely successful AMG GT3 Evo.
The camouflaged development car is undergoing extensive testing at a variety of circuits, both at Mercedes-Benz test facilities and at public race tracks across Germany and Europe (indeed a car looking very much like the concept unveiled earlier this year was seen testing at the Nürburgring earlier this week, apparently in the hands of Thomas Jager).
Mercedes-AMG has confirmed to DSC that the development programme is on track with its timeline. However, there is no sign yet of pre-homologation race testing, or indeed of a confirmed launch timetable.
What DSC can confirm is that the car will not be homologated for competition in 2027.
Paddock sources in the FIA WEC had already confirmed to DSC that Iron Lynx is set to continue throughout the 2027 season with the current car, which has now been confirmed too by other current AMG teams racing elsewhere, with the final confirmation coming from Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing.
The new car, which also marks the next stage of a major transition for the brand from previous car-building service provider HWA to the newly established Affalterbach Racing Company, has big shoes to fill.
The current platform has overall wins at the Spa 24 Hours, Nurburgring 24 Hours, Dubai 24 Hours, Bathurst 12 Hour, Gulf 12 Hour and Indianapolis 8 Hours as well as class wins at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Sebring 12 Hours and Petit Le Mans with Championship wins in GT World Challenge, IGTC, DTM and IMSA competition on the Mercedes-AMG GT3 (and Evo) CV too.
