A brand new, un-liveried Oreca 07 Gibson is lapping at Indianapolis Motor Speedway today as the next step towards what is expected to be a full-season two-car Penske Motorsport LMP2 programme in the 2022 FIA WEC.
The effort, part of the preparation for the 2023 LMDH programme with Porsche in both IMSA and FIA WEC, marks the second time that the Penske organisation has run an LMP2 car after a one-off effort at Petit Le Mans in 2017 as part of the preparation for the squad’s 2018 IMSA DPi programme with Acura.
Drivers are, as yet, unconfirmed for the test but are expected to include several current Porsche factory drivers for the 2022 effort.
The Penske pair are set to join doubled-up WEC efforts from both Team WRT and United Autosports in what is expected to be a significantly increased MP2 field next season.
In other news, plans are also emerging of another start-up single car Oreca LMP2 effort for the 2022 FIA WEC, based in the UK.
