The 2024 Nürburgring 24 Hours has been moved to the weekend of June 1st and 2nd to avoid a clash with the FIA WEC’s 2024 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, which was set to take place on May the 11th, the same weekend as the original N24 date.
The ADAC felt the change was necessary as the clash would have “presented many teams and drivers with problems, as the FIA WEC will have a class for GT3 cars in 2024”.
The new date for the race means it will run the weekend before the circuit’s huge ‘Rock am Ring’ music festival. It will make for a logistical challenge, but both event organisers have agreed to make it work.
“Since the organizers of Rock am Ring and the Nürburgring have shown themselves to be extremely flexible, we were able to make the postponement possible,” said Walter Hornung, race director of the 24h Nürburgring.
“Rock am Ring will take place as planned from June 7th to 9th, 2024, but the set-up and dismantling times of the two mega-events, which are now in direct succession, has to be drastically reduced.
“Because we know how complex the coordination with other series and individual events in GT3 racing is, we have already announced dates for the 24h Nürburgring up to and including 2028 from 2021,” Walter Hornung continued.
“Of course, all relevant players are aware of this, so that overlapping dates in the international calendar are avoided and collisions with other major events at the same location are prevented.
“We are all the happier that Rock am Ring and the Nürburgring have joined us in accepting the short-term logistical and technical challenge of having two completely different events, each with tens of thousands of spectators, on two consecutive weekends.”
This change means the only notable clash for the FIA WEC’s 2024 schedule with another sportscar event is the 6 Hours of Imola taking place on the same weekend as the expected 2024 IMSA Grand Prix of Long Beach.
