The local Marshals club has fielded no fewer than 800 volunteer marshals, recovery and emergency response workers this weekend. From a standing start 10 years ago with help from an Australian training team the club now has 1200 members with the club supplying a full marshalling team for the F1 Grand Prix in India for the first two years (2011 and 2012).
Allan McNish adds to this story that a very high proportion of the marshals here are female – Well nowadays he doesn’t have to worry as much about keeping his eyes on the road!
Remember that the vast majority of this race will be run under the floodlights, each of the lighting poles lit to 50% of their capacity.
That doesn’t quite turn night into day here (but comes damn close!)
Pitlane Boss Alain Tannier has fitted a broad peak to his helmet for the occasion, it prevents his all seeing eyes from dazzle!
