Wainwright To Return For WEC Finale, Al Qubaisi To Sub In China

First 2017 WEC appearance for the Emirati

Gulf Racing UK team owner Mike Wainwright will return to the cockpit of the team’s Porsche 911 RSR GTE for the WEC season finale in Bahrain, DSC has learned.

The team explained to DSC that American Mike Hedlund, who is driving with the team for the first time at Fuji this weekend, is in for a one-off and that a deal has been done with GTE Am class winner Khaled Al Qubaisi to sub for Wainwright at Shanghai. Wainwright has been forced to skip the two rounds of the season due to business commitments.

“I got the chance to drive with Gulf through Ben Barker,” Hedlund explained to DSC. “It’s just a one off, I’d never been to Japan before, so I really wanted to come for this one. The WEC race at Fuji has been a target for me for a while.”

Emirati Al Qubaisi meanwhile, will be making his first start in the WEC since the 2016 season finale at Bahrain, where he drove in the Abu Dhabi Proton Porsche with David Heinemeier Hansson and Patrick Long, a race which he won, securing second in the class championship standings.
