Paul-Loup Chatin set the quickest time of the second free practice session of the ELMS weekend at Monza. With a 1:35.701 in the #28 IDEC Sport ORECA, he edged out Arjun Maini in the #43 RLR Sport ORECA 07 Gibson.
Third overall was the #26 G-Drive Racing Aurus 01 Gibson, which finished up third position with a 1:36.035.
However, times weren’t the biggest headline from running, which was chaotic and interuppted by Full-Course Yellows and a lengthy red flag.
Just seven minutes after the session went green, the #30 Duqueine Engineering ORECA encountered some mechanical issues and stopped on track. This triggered the first Full-Course Yellow, which lasted a few minutes.
The session was red flagged moments later though, after Leo Roussel had a big off in the #34 Inter Europol Competition Ligier JS P217 Gibson. On his second lap, the Frenchman went off at Parabolica, the car landing on top of the barriers.
Fortunately, Roussel was able to leave the damaged car on his own, before being taken to a local hospital for a medical check-up. The #34 was returned to the pits with a heavily damaged front end. It is unclear whether the car will be repaired for this afternoon’s qualifying session.
Once session resumed, the best times were set. First was Maini, who set RLR’s fastest time, before Chatin vaulted the RLR ORECA to the top of the order 20 minutes later.
In the rest of the LMP2 field, there was one noticeable incident with the #32 United Autosport Ligier JS P217 Gibson driven by Ryan Cullen losing rear bodywork on track. This triggered a second Full-Course Yellow period which lasted a few minutes.
Meanwhile in LMP3, it was a 1-2 for Norma. David Droux in the #9 Realteam Racing Norma M30 Nissan set the fastest lap time (1:46.531), a tenth quicker than the #10 Oregon Team Norma M30 shared by Damiano Fioravanti, Gustas Grinbergas and Lorenzo Bontempelli. The first Ligier JS P3 was third with the #11 Eurointernational driven by Mikkel Jensen and Jens Petersen, nearly half a second behind the fastest Norma.
In LMGTE, the #77 Dempsey Proton Competition and the #56 Project 1 Porsche 911 RSRs were untouchable on pace
Jorg Bergmeister in the #56 set the fastest lap halfway through the session (1:47.444). 10 minutes later, Matteo Cairoli in the #77 clocked a 1:47.098 and remained on top of the timesheets throughout the rest of the session. The #51 Luzich Racing Ferrari F488 GTE Evo driven by Alessandro Pier Guidi, Nicklas Nielsen and Fabien Lavergne ended third fastest (1:48.037).
Next up for the ELMS runners is the qualifying session scheduled at 13:40 pm local time.
