Johnny Mowlem’s many sportscar racing experiences have been documented in his long running Sky Sports programme Mowlem’s Racing Travels, but this week the experienced Berkshire-based racer and team manager encounters a new adrenaline rush.
Mowlem climbs atop of the wings of a vintage bi-plane as he emulates the barnstormers of yesteryear. Not contentment with that he also zip wires across a Welsh slate quarry at speeds close to 100 mph. But in this action packed half hour programme the boss of Red River Sport also fits in some racing as he competes in the recent Barcelona 24 Hours race, a first for the young team.
Our cameras follow Mowlem as he heads to the Chiltern Air Park in Oxfordshire to fulfil a long held dream. But he had nor bargained for a heavy rain storm which left him somewhat be-draggled after looping the loop courtesy of top display pilot Mike Denith and his Boeing Stearman PT17.
Continuing the theme, he also headed to Zip World in Penrhyn Quarry, North Wales to ride on Velocity 2, the fastest zip wire in the World together with Red River racer Bonamy Grimes. On-helmet cameras follow them as they accelerate to close on 100 mph.
Having survived both experiences, Mowlem returns to his more natural habitat of a racing car as he competes together with Grimes, Ivor Dunbar and fellow pro driver Charlie Hollings in the Creventic 24Hr series in Spain. After a race of highs and lows the crew in the Ferrari 488 GT3 finally completed the gruelling Barcelona 24 hours in 12th place overall, having run as high as third in the opening stage.
