13 Hypercars For The WEC Season, But How Many For Le Mans?

Could It Be 18?

The 13 car HyperCar grid for the 2023 FIA WEC is already fantastic news for the class.

But the centenary edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans offers the opportunity for a further boost to numbers.

There is already a ‘known known’ with the Action Express Cadillac V-LMDH nominated by IMSA for one of their automatic invitations this year.

Glickenhaus Racing too have confirmed that they will request a second entry for the HK Motorcars-owned SCG 007 that finished 3rd overall in 2022.

The Sporting Regulations for the great race allow existing full-season WEC HyperCar teams to request an additional car for Le Mans.

Our friend Instagram blogger Daniel Weber at LemansHyperCarNews has also established that Colin Kolles at the ByKolles-run Floyd Vanwall Racing Team has suggested that he will submit a second entry too.

And there are still two further teams that may well take advantage of that opportunity.

Toyota Gazoo Racing, Ferrari, AF Corse and Peugeot TotalEnergies have all, publicly and/or privately, counted themselves out for a third car in 2023 at Le Mans.

But at present, neither Porsche Penske Motorsport, nor the Ganassi Racing – operated Cadillac Racing have counted out the possibility, and there is good reason to believe that either, or both, might commit.

All told, and subject to entries emerging, and the ACO saying yes to all of them, there is a potential 18 car Hypercar grid on the horizon for the centenary 24 Hours of Le Mans. And then more to come in 2024!
