Ginetta is working hard to secure additional cars for the GT2 European Series in 2026, beyond the two already announced, according to the company’s motorsport chief executive, Mike Simpson.
Currently, the Yorkshire-based manufacturer has two cars run by partner team CMR confirmed for the season, and the hope is that by the time the campaign gets underway at Monza in May, at least one more G56 GT2 will line up on the grid.
“We should have four cars ready for the start of the season. We’ve got a third car that I’m trying to get out there racing,” Simpson told DSC. “We’re really pushing hard, you know. I’ve not seen any other GT2 announcements, so again it’s Ginetta at the forefront, pushing to make things happen!
“We can’t do much more than we are right now, but we’ve committed to the cars; the first production batch is four cars with parts, and we should just about get there with the builds.”
Simpson explained that while there has been significant interest in its GT2 car, there has been a recurring stumbling block to getting more cars out into the wild. As with its LMP3 car, Ginetta has been contacted almost exclusively by potential customers wishing to lease rather than purchase outright.
“The best thing is, people are talking about it,” he pointed out. “GT2s are high-performance cars that come at a premium, so it’s tricky to find teams that are willing to commit a car for multiple years if the series doesn’t kick off in the way people expect.
“We’re not in the business of leasing cars, and I’ve had lots of enquiries about that. But we don’t do that, we’ve got a factory to feed and people’s mortgages to pay.
“CMR are a key partner for Ginetta. They do a great job of understanding our driver development ladder through the different Ginetta models; they’re pushing out GT Academy in French GT and moving drivers up from the G56 GT Academy car into FFSA French / European GT4. We hope that means more for GT2 soon, because they’re fully aligned with what we’re doing.
“The good news is that I gather there is going to be a healthy number of cars in the series. It’s going to be quite a lot better than it’s been, and with the SRO GT Academy now a part of it, there’s a stunning prize (a full season of GT World Challenge Europe) up for grabs.
“We’ve got two young drivers with CMR, and they really want that Academy prize.”
