Proton Competition Ready To Run Customer 963s In WEC & IMSA In 2023

But awaiting confirmation of availability of two cars for next season

One of the hottest sportscar racing questions in the paddock and on social media at present in sportscar racing is the destination of the final pair of privateer Porsche 963s for the 2023 season.

As we have previously written about on DSC, one of the teams expressing early interest in multiple cars was Proton Competition and that interest is still very much alive.

Team Principal Christin Ried has long-time links to Porsche and has irons in the fire currently in both the FIA WEC and IMSA’s WeatherTech Sportscar Championship and, if he has anything to do with it, that situation will continue into the Hypercar and GTP era.

“We are very much interested and, if we can get the cars, we would like to run a 963 in the WEC and another in the US next season.

“The issue is whether we can get two cars for next year.”

That final statement, which Christian was unwilling to expand upon, suggests that there is a competing party for one or the other of the final two of four cars set to be allocated to customers in the first year of the 963.

Porsche have confirmed their intention to allocate two cars apiece to the WEC and IMSA customers in 2023.

Christian is also unsure where, if only one car is available for the coming season, that would be, either in WEC or IMSA.

Other industry sources meanwhile have confirmed that the current guidance from Porsche is that Daytona is likely to see the factory 963s only, with some potential that the delay in deliveries may stretch as far as Sebring (for both IMSA and WEC cars).
