News of the passing of Racing America chief operating officer Michael Printup reached DSC overnight via a statement from the organisation.
Printup, who previously served as president of the Watkins Glen International circuit from 2009 to 2023.
He spent multiple decades in the sport, including a nearly 30-year stint with NASCAR.
After stepping down from his role at WGI, Printup joined Racing America in July 2023 as president of the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA).
In January 2024, he was promoted to COO, overseeing the Trans Am Series and all racing operations.
“Michael was an icon in motorsports, a great partner and a friend,” Racing America said in its statement. “His passion for racing and commitment to the industry made a lasting impact on the sport. Michael will be deeply missed. Racing America sends our thoughts and condolences to Michael’s family, friends and colleagues.”
Watkins Glen International added the following after his passing:
“Watkins Glen International is saddened by the passing of former President, who led the facility for 15 years.
“During his tenure, Michael played a key role in the continued growth and success of Watkins Glen International. He helped to strengthen its operations, partnerships, and standing within the motorsports industry while honouring the venue’s storied history.
“Michael was a respected leader who left a lasting impact on the organisation and those who worked alongside him. We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.”
The IMSA president John Doonan also released a statement, which reads.
All of us at IMSA were saddened to learn that our longtime friend and colleague, has passed away.
The team worked together closely with Michael and his team throughout his 15-year tenure as president of Watkins Glen International. Our annual events grew substantially under his leadership.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael’s wife, Stephanie, and his two sons, Brendan and Matthew, along with his extended family and many friends and colleagues.”
Michael is survived by his wife, Stephanie, two boys, Brendan (Caitlin) and Matthew, and two granddaughters, Sophia and Vivienne.
Racing America has passed on details of the memorial service for Michael, which will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 from 2-4 p.m. at James A. Dyal Funeral Home (303 S. Main Street, Summerville, SC 29483).
