Have Maserati Shelved Plans For GT3 Version of MC20?

Another potential motorsport victim of the economic downturn caused by the COVID19 pandemic may well have been a GT3 version of the recently launched Maserati MC20 Supercar.

When the new car was unveiled, a racing version was said to be under development but DSC sources have confirmed that an initial plan to produce a GT3 homologated version of the twin-turbo V6 engined car has been shelved for the time being at the very least.

Had the MC20 plan gone ahead it would have been the third Maserati model homologated for GT3 with the  Maserati Coup Grand Sportif Light an early adopter in 2006, based on the 3200 GT and the later Maserati GranTurismo model homologated into the class by Swiss team as the V8-powered MC GT3 that raced briefly in GT Open.

Maserati also has a history of producing one-make racers with both the 4200GT and GranTurismo platforms featured in a variety of Series across the globe until the end of 2015, after which several of the ex Trofeo cars were repurposed as GT4 racers.

An approach to Maserati for comment has met with no response.
