Proton Looking At IMSA GTP In 2026 & Hypercar in Asia

Christian Ried hasn’t taken too long to bounce back from the disappointment of confirmation just a few days ago of the cessation of his Porsche Hypercar effort in the FIA WEC.

The privateer programme was a victim of the decision by Porsche to withdraw their factory Hypercar programme from the FIA WEC.

But now Ried is already in active discussions about returning to IMSA at some point in the 2026 season, describing discussions today as “helpful and very positive.”

With the Rolex 24 entry at the known 61 car maximum at present that option may not be on the table but the German squad is clearly interested in running in multiple races in IMSA’s top class in 2026.

Beyond that DSC asked about the prospects for a Proton Porsche effort in the forthcoming Pro-Am Hypercar class for 2026/27.

Acknowledging that the past weeks have been busy with the attempts to salvage a WEC Hypercar programme Christian confirmed both that there was no current customer for an Asian programme yet confirmed but made it clear that the team is very interested in bringing “Either one or two” Porsche 963s to the Championship if paying customers can be sourced.

With BBM Sport effectively confirming plans to field a pair of Peugeots the race to build a grid is on.
